Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS)
Who They Are
Advanced Trauma Life Support for Manitoba, better known as ATLS®, provides a course that outlines a systematic and consistent approach for the effective assessment and resuscitation of a traumatized patient.
Up until late last year ATLS® had been running their entire course offline. Registration was done through submitted word documents and all necessary information on registrants was being tracked manually through a Microsoft Excel file. Payments were typically done by cheque.
Data was being stored on an isolated computer with limited backups available. There was no way of tracking previous registrations, courses attended, grades, evaluations, etc. Nothing was automated and they found themselves printing excessive amounts of course material that really wasn’t necessary.
Our Solution
ATLS® desperately needed to automate their work-flow, not only because of how inefficient their process was, but also because they have limited staff to support the ATLS® course. Working closely with the ATLS® team, we mapped out the entire course, all the way from on-line registration to final grading.
We figured out the different user relationships and what each particular role required, then we built a system that runs the entire course online.
Now registrants can go online and register for any course that is available. They create their own profiles and pay electronically. The system will automatically place the registrant in the designated course and build the scheduling around that registrant.
ATLS® administrators have a customized, robust back end that manages everything involved with the course.
They can now:
• Build online schedules
• Add, edit and delete courses
• Review registrant information
• Re-assign registrants to other courses
• Refund registrations
• Grade registrants based on evaluations
The Result
ATLS® now has a fully automated solution for their on-line course. It takes care of all of the heavy lifting, saving them a lot of time. It also provides a secure solution that stores and backs up data daily. They never have to worry about losing information and all users – including registrants, instructors and administrators – have on-line access anytime.
Because the system was completely customized they can build onto it in the future integrating new functionality and features.
